Ok, so you need some basil, wheat, dill, mint, chamomile, poppy heads, cannabis seeds, feathers, a bit of holly water, sweet milk, a whole egg and some cash.
Is it a stew? Is it a drink? Is it a joke?
No, it’s only the traditional Romanian first bath for newborns. Basil will help the babies grow attractive, wheat will make them honest, dill will make them pleasant and enjoyable just like dill makes food pleasant and enjoyable (well, if you like dill), mint, chamomile and eggs will make them healthy, poppy heads will make them sleep tight, cannabis seeds will make them grow up fast, feathers will make them easy?? (easy-going, I hope), holly water will make them pure and money will make them rich, obviously.
All the ingredients go in the water in which the baby is bathed. The greatest challenge is not to break the egg because you need the same egg for the second bath. After the bath is done, you remove the money and the egg and you put the water at the bottom of an apple tree or of a pear tree, so that the baby grows tall and handsome like that tree. Then the basin is turned upside down and all the ladies must dance around it three times. After that, the lady that gave the bath must jump over the basin while the women that would like to be with child must make a wish accordingly.
Finally, the baby is given to the godmother, who needs to give the baby more cash, according to the tradition, while the mother gets a glass of alcohol, also according to the tradition.
P.S. Men are not allowed at the first bath. Not that any of them ever complained.
